Three soldiers were killed while repelling a Boko Haram attack in Kukawa, Borno State, on Monday, according to the Defence Headquarters.
In a statement on Tuesday, the military confirmed that the attack, carried out by terrorists using gun trucks and motorcycles, targeted the 101 Special Forces Battalion stationed in the area.
The terrorists attempted to breach the camp with a Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED) from the Gudumbali axis.
Despite the assault, the troops responded with overwhelming firepower, receiving support from the Air Component and the Nigerian Army’s Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Command.
The statement said 12 terrorists were killed during the attack, while others fled with gunshot wounds.
The military also recovered several items from the terrorists, including 5 AK-47 rifles, 1 RPG bomb, 40 motorcycles, and other military equipment.
Four out of seven VBIEDs deployed by the terrorists were destroyed.
“Regrettably, three brave soldiers paid the ultimate price during the attack. Efforts to clear and exploit the area are ongoing,” the statement read.
The acting Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Olufemi Oluyede, commended the troops for their bravery and urged them to maintain their resolve in the fight against terrorism in the region.
