Stephen Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver, has taken legal action against Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives, alleging assault.
Abuwatseya’s lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, confirmed that the Inspector General of Police’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU) will handle the prosecution at Kuje Magistrate Court in Abuja.
Adeyanju released a statement reading, “We are on our way to Kuje Magistrate Court for the arraignment of the honourable member who assaulted our client, Mr. Stephen, a Bolt driver. The IGP’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU) is in charge of the investigation and prosecution. The media is invited to cover the arraignment scheduled for 12 p.m. today at Kuje Magistrate.”
Ikwechegh, who represents Aba North and South Federal Constituency under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), was recently filmed slapping Abuwatseya.
In the viral video, Ikwechegh appeared angered by the driver’s request for him to collect an item outside his residence in Abuja.
The incident, which took place last Sunday evening, sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for Ikwechegh’s suspension over what they deemed an “unbecoming” act by a lawmaker.
In response, Ikwechegh has issued a public apology.
