Blackout in Nigeria as power grid collapses again

Nigeria’s National Electricity Grid has once again collapsed.

The grid collapse occurred at about 2:42 am on Monday, resulting in power generation dropping to 64.70megawatt.

But only one generation company, Ibom Power, remained active as shown by data from the Independent System Operator (ISO), a branch of the Transmission Company of Nigeria.

Monday’s incident brings to six the number of grid collapses suffered by Nigeria since January 2024.

As of 8am on Monday, the latest data from the ISO showed that the grid was only able to generate 266.50mw of electricity from Okpai, Geregu and Ibom power.

Jos DisCo, in a statement confirming the grid collapse, said, “The current outage being experienced within our franchise States is a result of loss of power supply from the national grid. The loss of power supply from the national grid occurred in the early hours at about 0242Hours of today, Monday, 15th April 2024, hence the loss of power supply on all our feeders.”

Head of Corporate Affairs, Dr Friday Adakole Elijah, expressed hope that the grid will be restored to ensure normal power supply to customers.
