Benue LG chairman’s abductors demand N50m ransom

In a concerning turn of events, the abductors of Rev. Gideon Haanongon, Chairman of Ukum Local Government Area in Benue State, have reportedly demanded a ransom of N50 million for his release.

The chairman was ambushed and abducted, along with his personal assistant, driver, and police orderly, by unknown armed men on Saturday morning at Anyagba, Tongov, along the Katsina-Ala-Zaki Biam road in Katsina-Ala LGA.

A family source, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that negotiations have commenced between the abductors and the chairman’s family.

The source stated, “From what we have seen so far, his abductors are members of a local bandit. They have started discussing this with his family, and they are demanding a million ransom for his release.”

The ongoing discussions have raised concerns about the safety of the abducted individuals.

The State Commissioner for Information, Culture, and Tourism, Mr Matthew Abo, acknowledged the situation, stating, “I heard that the kidnappers are demanding a certain amount of money, though I cannot authenticate the veracity of the rumor. I cannot also state categorically, but the state government has mobilized security operatives who are working hard to rescue the chairman.”

Efforts are underway to address this distressing situation, with both family members and the state government involved in negotiating the release of the abducted chairman.

The security agencies are actively engaged in the matter, but details regarding potential ransom payment remain uncertain at this time.
