August 1: NCoS Declares Prisons ‘Red Zones’ Ahead of Protests

Ahead of the commencement of the hunger protests on August 1, the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has issued a stern warning for individuals to stay away from its facilities unless they have official business there.

The Service emphasized that correctional centres have been designated as red zones.

“Any person or group of persons who have no business whatsoever should steer clear,” stated Public Relations Officer Abubakar Umar in a statement on Tuesday.

Umar highlighted the importance of custodial and non-custodial centres as critical national assets essential for public safety and national security.

“Tampering with or attacking these centres could lead to a breakdown of law and order and further exacerbate societal security,” he warned.

He added, “Adequate security arrangements have been put in place to ensure that no correctional facility is compromised.”

The Ministry of Interior Joint Taskforce has been activated to bolster security around these facilities nationwide.

Controller-General of Corrections, Haliru Nababa, expressed gratitude for public cooperation in maintaining peace around correctional centres.

The NCoS urged the public to report any suspicious activities via email at info@corrections.gov.ng, through their website at www.corrections.gov.ng, or by calling 09060004598 or 08075050006 directly.
