Akwa Ibom State Police Command said it has arrested an Assistant Superintendent of Police, Joweigha Michael, for preliminary investigation into the death of one Kubiat Isaac, a University of Uyo student allegedly beaten to death for armed robbery and cultism.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Odiko Macdon, stated in a press release in Uyo on Saturday that Kubiat Isaac, who is already being investigated for suspected armed robbery and cultism, was arrested at Eni Stores on August 29, 2021.
Macdon said the suspect however died in the Police Clinic where he was taken for treatment after he felt sick during questioning.
“It is expedient to state that the said Kubiat Isaac was being investigated for the offence of suspected Armed Robbery and Cultism and had been evading arrest for some time.
“He was traced to and arrested at Eni Stores on the 29th of August 2021 and taken for questioning. On arrival at the Division, the DPO ordered that he be transferred to the State CID where the case was pending for a discreet investigation.
“Unfortunately, the Suspect said he was sick. He was taken to the Police Clinic for treatment but gave up the ghost in the process,” he stated.
The PPRO said the Commissioner of Police, Amiengheme Andrew, has ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death, saying torture of suspects by the Police will not be tolerated.
He sympathized with the family of the deceased and assured that the Officer would be held accountable and made to face the law if found culpable for the death of the suspect.
It was gathered that the deceased was a graduate of the University of Uyo waiting for his NYSC enrolment in November.
He was said to have been arrested by the Police for robbery and taken to the station without filing the case, adding that he was beaten to death in the police cell.
