Amnesty International calls on Tinubu to address epidemic of kidnappings, killings in Nigeria

In a stern and unequivocal statement, Amnesty International, a global human rights organization, on Monday called on President Bola Tinubu to take decisive and lawful actions to halt the escalating cycle of violence and fear that has gripped Nigeria.

The organization urges the President to initiate thorough investigations into the pervasive waves of kidnapping and killings, ensuring that those suspected of responsibility are brought to justice.

The human rights watchdog has raised alarm over the prevailing atmosphere of terror, emphasizing that many families opt not to report incidents of kidnapping even after paying ransoms, fearing potential reprisals. Consequently, numerous cases remain undocumented, contributing to the widespread sense of insecurity among the Nigerian populace.

Amnesty International has pointedly criticized the Nigerian authorities, asserting that the current epidemic of kidnappings underscores a systemic failure on their part to effectively safeguard the lives of citizens.

The organisation wrote on its X handle: “President Bola Tinubu must take all lawful measures to end the cycle of violence and fear people in Nigeria are living under today, by effectively investigating waves of kidnapping and killings and bringing those suspected of responsibility to justice.

“Many families choose not to report cases of kidnapping after paying ransom for fear of reprisals and as a result many incidents go undocumented. The current epidemic of kidnapping highlights the utter failure of the Nigerian authorities to effectively protect lives.”

The organization’s call for President Tinubu to intervene underscores the urgency of addressing the pressing human rights crisis in Nigeria.

The statement highlights the imperative for a comprehensive and robust response, urging the Nigerian government to address the root causes of the insecurity, enhance protective measures for citizens, and ensure that perpetrators face legal consequences for their actions.

Amnesty International’s vocal stance serves as a poignant reminder of the need for immediate and concrete action to restore safety and security to the people of Nigeria, who continue to endure the devastating impacts of violence and kidnappings.
