…arraign Nigerian couple before Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court
The United Kingdom Metropolitan Police say they launched an investigation into the involvement of former deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice, in alleged organ harvesting and trafficking after its detectives got the hint about the alleged crime last month.
According to the Metropolitan Police, it began Ekweremadu and his wife’s probe after its detectives were alerted in May 2022 that the Nigerian couple had committed potential offences under modern slavery legislation by bringing an unidentified child to the Uk for the purpose of harvesting its organs.
It said in a statement on Thursday that the suspected couple were then arrested and charged over their plan to bring a child into the UK for alleged organ harvest.
Already, the Metropolitan Police have formally charged the couple with conspiracy to facilitate the travel of another person for organ harvesting.
The Metropolitan Police statement identified the two arrested suspects as Beatrice Nwanneka Ekweremadu, 55, and Ike Ekweremadu, 60, from Nigeria.
They have been remanded in custody and will appear at an Uxbridge magistrates’ court later on Thursday.
The UK Guardian reports Ekweremadu and his wife are charged with conspiracy to harvest organs.
The report, which quoted the Metropolitan Police statement, added that the charges involve arranging or facilitating travel of another person with a view to exploiting the individual, namely organ harvesting.
The child involved has been safeguarded, according to the Met.
The investigation was launched after detectives were alerted to potential offences under modern slavery legislation in May 2022, the force said.
