Alleged N2.2bn fraud: Fayose’s trial stalled over judge’s absence

The trial of a former governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, and a firm, Spotless Investment Limited failed to hold as scheduled on Thursday due to the absence of the trial judge, Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke of the Lagos State Federal High Court.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is prosecuting Fayose over alleged N2.2 billion fraud.

The matter was fixed to continue on Thursday but Justice Aneke and other judges of the court were away on a valedictory court session in the honour of a retired judge, Justice Saliu Saidu.

Consequently, the trial of the former governor, who has since indicated interest to vile for the office of the President in 2023, was adjourned till April 26, 27, 28, 2021.

Among other things, the EFCC is alleging that Fayose on June 17, 2014, “took possession of the sum of N1, 219, 000,000 to fund your 2014 gubernatorial campaign in Ekiti State, which you reasonably ought to have known formed part of the proceeds of an unlawful act, to wit: criminal breach of trust/stealing.”
