The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has been thrown into mourning following the death of its Commissioner, Mr. Waheed Ayilara, who passed away after undergoing prostate cancer surgery at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).
According to a family source who spoke to The Nation newspaper, Mr. Ayilara died on Thursday morning.
The source expressed the family’s deep sorrow, stating, “We are very sad to inform you that our friend, brother, and family, the Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State, Waheed Ayilara, is dead.”
The tragic news was also confirmed by a senior police officer in Akwa Ibom State.
However, the Nigeria Police Force has yet to release an official statement regarding Ayilara’s passing.
Waheed Ayilara, previously served as the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department. He assumed the role of Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State in February 2024, succeeding AIG Idowu Owohunwa. His appointment was made by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
Ayilara’s death marks a significant loss for the Nigeria Police Force and the people of Akwa Ibom State, who benefitted from his leadership and dedication to maintaining law and order.
