Airtel Nigeria has announced a major milestone in its fight against digital fraud, revealing that its newly deployed artificial intelligence-powered Spam Alert Service identified over 9.6 million suspected spam messages between March 13 and May 20, 2025.
The telecommunications company made the disclosure in a statement issued on Monday in Lagos, highlighting its ongoing commitment to user security and digital trust.
According to Airtel, the Spam Alert Service, launched in March, flagged a total of 9,667,008 suspicious SMS messages during its initial two-month operation. Of these, 528,080 messages originated from on-net sources within Airtel’s network, while a staggering 9,138,928 were traced to off-net sources, reflecting the considerable scale of potential threats from external networks.

“In deploying the Spam Alert Service, our aim is to protect customers from unwanted and potentially fraudulent communications,” the statement read. “At Airtel Nigeria, we are focused on connecting Nigerians and ensuring their safety and confidence while using our network. We understand that trust is the cornerstone of digital communication.”
The company explained that the AI system was designed not only to detect threats in real time but also to adapt and improve as new data becomes available. “As threats become more sophisticated, so will our solutions,” the spokesperson added. “We remain committed to leading the industry in innovation and customer satisfaction, ensuring that every Nigerian can enjoy a safer and smarter digital experience.”
The Spam Alert Service forms part of Airtel Nigeria’s broader initiative to strengthen its digital infrastructure and safeguard its over 60 million subscribers from cyber threats and spam-related harassment.
