For the first time in 36 years, Canada on Sunday, March 27, beat Jamaica 4-0 to qualify for a second World Cup after the country’s only appearance at the 1986 Mexico tournament
Canada’s victory in Toronto followed goals from Cyle Larin, Tajon Buchanan, Junior Hoilett and Adrian Mariappa own goal.
The Canadian team secured all three points after dominating the Jamaican side already eliminated from contention in the CONCACAF region’s qualifying tournament for this year’s finals in Qatar.
There were wild celebrations at Toronto’s 30,000-capacity BMO Field as the referee blew the last whistle, as an expectant sell-out crowd, who gathered to watch the match, could hold back the joy of seeing Canada clinch World Cup qualification for only the second time, having last appeared at the 1986 Mexico tournament.
