Abia State’s first civilian gov, Ogbonnaya Onu dies at 72

A former governor of Abia State, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, is dead.

He was aged 72.

Ọnụ, who was also a former Minister of Science and Technology in the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, died in an Abuja Hospital.

Family sources confirmed Onu’s death on Thursday.

The former governor died after a brief illness in an undisclosed hospital.

He hailed from Ụbụrụ in the Ohaozara Local Government area of Ebonyi State.

He contested for the presidential flag of the All Progressive Congress during the 2023 general elections but lost to President Bola Tinubu.

Until his death, Onu was a Nigerian politician, author, and engineer.

The former Abia state governor was the longest-serving minister of science, technology, and innovation.

As of the time of filing this story, neither his family nor the Ebonyi State Government had issued any statement on his demise.
