Hundreds of former members of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Oyo State have defected to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), marking a significant shift as the 2027 general elections draw nearer.

The defectors were welcomed by John Ogunsola, a PDP member and House of Representatives aspirant, who praised Governor Seyi Makinde’s leadership as a major factor in the mass defection.

Ogunsola lauded the governor’s transformative initiatives, which he said have played a crucial role in attracting new members to the party.

“Let us embrace our new members with open arms and work together to propel our state’s progress,” Ogunsola urged, emphasising the need for unity as the party prepares for the upcoming elections.

At the party secretariat, PDP Chairman for Oluyole Local Government, Mukaila Adegbola, congratulated the defectors, assuring them they would find fulfillment and opportunity within the PDP.

“The PDP stands as a beacon of growth and development for our citizens, delivering true dividends of democracy,” Adegbola stated.

He credited Governor Makinde’s administration for making it easier for Ogunsola to attract new members from the SDP.

Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Dauda Hamsat Awayewaserere expressed admiration for Governor Makinde’s leadership and achievements.

He assured the PDP leadership of their full support, adding that more former SDP members were expected to join.

The new members pledged their commitment to strengthening the PDP’s presence at both the local government and state levels, vowing to play an active role in the party’s future success.

“We are dedicated to making the PDP a more vigorous force in our community and beyond,” they affirmed.
