South African sensation Tyla stole the spotlight at the 30th MTV Europe Music Awards held in Manchester, UK, on the 10th of November, 2024, where she claimed an impressive three awards.
Rising above strong competition from Nigerian heavyweights like Asake, Tems, Rema, Burna Boy, and Ayra Starr, she took home the award for Best Afrobeats Artist.
Tyla also clinched the Best African Act title, besting Ayra Starr, Asake, DBN Gogo, TitoM & Yuppe, and Diamond Platnumz.
Her winning streak continued as she secured the Best R&B Artist award, surpassing renowned American stars such as Kehlani, SZA, Tinashe, Usher, and Victoria Monét.
Capping off her victorious night, Tyla delivered a soulful acoustic rendition of her hit single, “Water.”
In contrast, Nigerian star Ayra Starr went home without a win despite her four nominations in categories like Best African Act, Best New Artist, Best Afrobeats Artist, and Best Push.
Recall that earlier this year, the singer made waves by winning the inaugural Best African Music Performance award at the Grammys and snagging the Best Afrobeats Artist title at the 2024 MTV Music Video Awards, once again, edging out Nigerian competitors.
