Borno State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Shehu Lawan, was on Thursday elected as All Progressive Congress’ candidate for Borno Central Senatorial District in the 2023 elections.
Lawan replaced Senator Kashim Shettima, who has been nominated as Vice Presidential candidate by the party’s presidential flagbearer, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.
Shettima had relinquished the ticket after Tinubu announced him as his running mate.
Delegates from the eight local governments in the senatorial district, on Thursday, converged on the APC state Secretariat in Maiduguri, the state capital, and elected Lawan.
The delegates from Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, Jere, Mafa, Bama, Dikwa, Konduga, Kalabalge and Ngala LGAs, which make up the Borno Central Senatorial District elected Lawan unopposed.
Chairman of the APC Electoral Primary Election Committee, Alhaji Uba Maigari Amadu, who spoke after the election, said Lawan, the new APC candidate for Borno Central, scored 459 cast out of the 480 accredited votes.
In his response after he was declared winner, Lawan thanked Governor Babagana Zulum for standing firm to ensure the unity of the party in the state.
The senatorial candidate also commended Senator Shettima for being a good leader to the APC in Borno State.
“If elected into the red chamber, as a lawyer I will demonstrate qualitative representation to the people of Borno State,” he said.
