Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Godwin Emefiele on Thursday said Nigerians can go ahead and have heart attacks over his rumoured presidential ambition, adding that “it’s good (for them) to have a heart attack.”
He made the comment when journalists confronted him after he had a meeting with President Muhammadu in Abuja.
Newsmen had told him that his presidential aspiration while still serving as the CBN governor has become a major concern for Nigerians and even the international community.
In his response, Emefiele said, “Let them have heart attacks. It’s good to have a heart attack.”
He added that he is “having fun.”
Nigerians have been criticising Emefiele over his presidential ambition despite his position as the CBN governor. Many have even called on him to either resign or should be sacked by President Muhammadu Buhari.
On Wednesday, May 11, when Buhari ordered members of his cabinet vying for various elective positions to resign on or before May 16, 2022, some Nigerians requested that the president should extend the same directive to Emefiele and other appointees.
Meanwhile, a circular signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, with reference number SGF/OP/ I/S.3/XII/ 173, showed that Buhari has also ordered ministers, heads of government agencies, ambassadors and other appointees with political ambitions to resign.
