The Minister of Science and Technology, Ogbonnaya Onu in compliance with the directive of President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday, has resigned his position as minister.
Buhari had during the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja, asked members of his cabinet and appointees vying for electoral offices to resign on or before May 16, 2022.
Reliable sources within the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the Ministry of Science and Technology confirmed later on Wednesday that Onu has dropped his resignation letter.
One of the sources said that Onu was at the office of the SGF “to drop his resignation. That was expected seeing as the president asked that they all should resign”.
Onu is among the 28 aspirants contesting for the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential ticket for the 2023 general elections.
He is the second minister to resign following the directive by Buhari after the Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba reigned earlier on Wednesday.
Other ministers including Chris Ngige (Labour), Timipre Sylva (State Petroleum), Abubakar Malami (Justice/Attorney General of the Federation), Akpabio (Niger Delta Affairs), Rotimi Amaechi (Transportation), Uche Ogar (State Mines and Steel), Pauline Tallen (Women Affairs) are expected to also tender their resignation soon.
