…vows arsonists won’t stop next general elections’ conduct
. Burning INEC offices, police stations won’t discourage us – Garba Shehu
The Presidency says President Muhammadu Buhari is not interested in running for a third term in 2023.
The Presidency also assured Nigerians that the burning of police stations and offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission won’t stop the 2023 general elections.
Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, gave this assurance while speaking on an Arise TV programme.
According to him, “It is very disturbing that INEC and police offices are being set ablaze in parts of the country by anarchists. I believe the law enforcement agents are sufficient enough to deal with them.
“Does anybody want to stop election in 2023? President Buhari is not interested in third term; he is not cut out for that. So, there will be election in 2023 and we will get there, God willing.”
Lately, frequent attacks on INEC offices, especially in the South-East and in the South-South regions have raised serious concerns with the INEC Chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, saying the situation had become a national emergency.
Although the attacks on INEC offices and police stations in the two geopolitical zones have been linked to the agitation for Biafra Republic by secessionist group, the Indigenous People of Biafra led by Nnamdi Kanu, the IPOB leader has since denied the allegation.
Despite the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba’s inauguration of various special squads to combat the menace, the yet-to-be-identified hoodlums have intensified their attacks and razing of INEC offices and killings of policemen.
