The Port Harcourt Refinery’s Old Wing has resumed operations with a capacity to process 60,000 barrels of crude oil daily, according to the presidency.
Sunday Dare, the Special Adviser on Public Communications and Orientation to the President, shared the news on his X handle.
He confirmed that 200 trucks are expected to load petroleum products daily.
“The Port Harcourt Refinery has two Wings. The Old Refinery comes on stream today with an installed production capacity of 60,000 barrels per day of crude oil.
“About 200 trucks are expected to load products daily from the refinery, renewing the hopes of Nigeria,” Dare wrote.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) had earlier announced the start of crude oil processing at the refinery.
This follows years of inactivity after the refinery was shut down in 2019. The facility underwent a $1.5 billion rehabilitation project approved by the Federal Government in 2021.
Despite being a leading crude oil producer, Nigeria has historically depended on imported petroleum products. This reliance, coupled with the 2023 removal of fuel subsidies, has driven up petrol costs.
