15-Year-Old Nigerian Artist Sets New World Record for Largest Canvas Painting

Kanyeyachukwu Tagbo-Okeke, a 15-year-old Nigerian artist on the autism spectrum, has achieved a remarkable milestone by securing the Guinness World Record for the largest individual canvas painting.

His expansive artwork, spanning 12,303.87 square meters, was unveiled at Eagle Square in Abuja on April 2, 2025, coinciding with World Autism Awareness Day, marking a significant moment for both the art world and advocacy efforts.

The unveiling ceremony, which included the official presentation of the Guinness World Record certificate, attracted a distinguished audience of officials, art enthusiasts, and advocates for autism awareness.

Tagbo-Okeke’s achievement surpasses the previous record of 9,652 square meters, held by an artist in Qatar, showcasing his exceptional talent and the boundless potential of individuals with autism.

Speaking at the event, Kanyeyachukwu’s father underscored his son’s unwavering determination, stating, “Many believed Kanyeyachukwu’s goal was unattainable, but he has proven them wrong. This is a celebration for children with autism globally, highlighting their extraordinary abilities.”

Hanatu Musawa, the Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy, celebrated Tagbo-Okeke’s accomplishment as a national triumph.

“We are here to recognize Kanyeyachukwu Tagbo-Okeke, a young Nigerian prodigy, who has demonstrated the power of passion coupled with hard work,” she remarked. “His record-breaking feat not only establishes a new benchmark but also illustrates that age is no barrier to achieving greatness.”

She reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting emerging artists and fostering inclusivity within the creative sector.

Amina Mohammed, the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, also commended the artwork, noting, “This awareness day, we witness the unveiling of an extraordinary masterpiece that shatters both records and barriers.”

She emphasized the artwork’s role in promoting autism awareness and the importance of cultivating environments where individuals with disabilities can flourish.

General Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff, highlighted the significance of nurturing and supporting talented individuals like Tagbo-Okeke as a crucial component of national development and security.

Kanyeyachukwu Tagbo-Okeke, born in November 2009, has already garnered recognition as a talented artist, with his works exhibited in galleries and museums across Nigeria, Europe, and Africa. His 2018 exhibition in Vienna, alongside other Nigerian artists, marked an early highlight in his promising career.
