Ten people lost their lives, and seven others sustained injuries in a building collapse that occurred in the early hours of Thursday in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.
The incident took place around 2 a.m. in the Jegeda Olunloyo area of Ona Ara Local Government Area.
The Oyo State Fire Services Agency released a statement detailing the tragic event, reporting that 10 individuals were found dead under the rubble, while seven people were rescued alive.
Efforts to locate any other potential survivors or victims are ongoing as emergency responders continue their work at the site.
“The Oyo State Fire Services Agency received a distressed call at around 2 a.m. this morning at Jegede Olunloyo area, Ibadan, of which 10 persons have been recovered from the debris of the collapsed building, while seven persons were rescued alive. Rescue operation is still going on,” the agency’s statement read.
Upon arrival, the General Manager of the Fire Services, Yemi Akinyinka, stated that 10 people had died before rescue teams reached the scene.
He explained, “We received a distress call from the people in the neighbourhood at 2 a.m. When we got there, ten people had died outrightly. Three people had been recovered before we got to the place, and our men recovered four. They are still working.”
The tragic event has shaken the community, which is reeling from the loss of lives and the injuries suffered by survivors.
The cause of the collapse remains unknown as of the time of this report, and authorities have yet to release further details on any structural issues that may have contributed to the incident.
The ongoing rescue operations are expected to continue throughout the day as emergency personnel carefully comb through the debris for any remaining victims.
