Work or Walk: Oborevwori’s Stern Warning to Commissioners

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has drawn a clear line in the sand for his cabinet members: deliver results or step aside.

The governor, speaking on Monday during the commissioning of eight newly completed duplexes at the Commissioners’ Quarters in Asaba, dismissed speculations of an impending mass dissolution of the State Executive Council.

However, he made it unmistakably clear that underperformers will not find shelter in his administration.

“If you are not performing, we will drop you. That will not affect others,” Oborevwori stated bluntly, adding that some commissioners had already been put on notice. “Two or three people are not performing. I told one of them today at the chapel — you are not doing well.”

The statement comes amid growing chatter about a potential cabinet shake-up, which the governor described as baseless gossip.

“These people haven’t even heard from me; this just shows that people like to talk too much,” he said.

Beyond quelling rumours, Oborevwori used the event to drive home a message of accountability and initiative.

He urged commissioners to take ownership of their roles, be visible in their duties, and actively engage with their ministries’ development.

“As a commissioner, we don’t see you. You must carry your memo, look for the governor — the governor will not come looking for you,” he emphasized. “Bring energy and initiative. Any ministry that is doing well shows that the commissioner is doing well. If there’s a problem, hold the commissioner responsible.”

Reiterating his commitment to infrastructure development, the governor revealed plans to replicate the Federal Government’s strategy in showcasing completed projects.

Referring to the recent inauguration of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road by President Tinubu, Oborevwori said his administration would soon begin commissioning projects in Warri in a similar fashion.

“We want to articulate and showcase all our projects in one location. We may not complete all of them before the year ends, but we will do our best,” he said.

Governor Oborevwori’s message was unambiguous: in Delta State’s corridors of power, results — not rumours — will secure your seat at the table.
