The Peoples Democratic Party has said that it will not grant the embattled Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, or any other person an automatic ticket to fly its flag in the September governorship election in the state.

The main opposition party said that whoever would emerge as its candidate in the gubernatorial poll should be prepared to go through a primary election.

PDP Chairman in Edo State, Mr. Tony Aziegbemi, who spoke against the backdrop of the crisis in the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress, stated this in a chat with our correspondent.

Aziegbemi, however, stressed that if Governor Obaseki decided to contest the forthcoming governorship election in the state on the PDP platform, the party would give him a waiver to enable him to do so.

The PDP chairman added that the party was watching developments in the ruling APC in Edo State with keen interest.

He also said that the party was ready for the state’s governorship election inspite of the ravaging COVID-19 pandemic.

Aziegbemi, who further spoke on the decision by the Independent National Electoral Commission to go ahead with the election as scheduled, said, “PDP is ready for the election and we are sure of winning.”

He said that the “minor crisis” that arose in the state chapter of the party over its congress held in March had been resolved and the aggrieved members pacified.

“Our leaders have talked to the aggrieved members, who felt dissatisfied with the outcome of our congress, which we held in March and they are listening. We are going into the primary this month (June) as a united body. After the primary, we will face the election squarely,“ he said.

The Edo PDP chairman also expressed the readiness of the party to abide by the guidelines for election in a pandemic period issued by INEC, saying the party would explore all avenues to reach out to the people without compromising their health.

Speaking on how the INEC Guidelines would affect the electoral fortune of the PDP in the September governorship poll in Edo, Aziegbemi said, “We will do better, we are in the same boat with other parties. We will fashion out ways and get the messages to the people. People are already dissatisfied with the APC and they are waiting for us to take over. I am assuring them we will not fail them.”
