Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja for Dakar, Senegal, to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the country’s 65th Independence Day celebrations.
Shettima’s trip comes just a day after President Tinubu embarked on a two-week working visit to France, raising speculation about Nigeria’s leadership engagements abroad.
Announcing his departure via his X account on Thursday, the Vice President stated that his attendance at the event is in response to an invitation from Senegal’s newly elected President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye. The visit underscores the strong diplomatic ties between Nigeria and Senegal.

Senegal marks its Independence Day every April 4, commemorating its liberation from French colonial rule in 1960. The occasion is celebrated with national pride, featuring parades, cultural displays, and official ceremonies at the Place de la Nation in Dakar.
Vice President Shettima will join other high-profile guests from across Africa and beyond as President Faye hosts his first Independence Day event since assuming office.
