Two Dead, Four Injured in Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Crashes

Two separate accidents on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway have claimed the lives of two people, including a 45-year-old man and an unidentified female passenger, while leaving four others injured.

The incidents occurred on Friday afternoon at the Long Bridge and Sagamu corridors of the expressway.

The Ogun State Police Command’s spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, disclosed that the first accident involved a Volkswagen bus, with registration number LSR 793 YF, carrying 14 passengers.

The bus was en route to Ibadan when one of its front tyres burst on the Long Bridge.

In a desperate attempt to maintain control, the driver lost command of the steering, causing the bus to crash into the median and somersault multiple times.

Tragically, an unidentified female passenger died on the spot, while four others—three women and one man—sustained varying degrees of injuries.

Emergency responders rushed the injured to A-Z Private Hospital in Magboro for medical attention.

Odutola stated, “Traffic personnel from the Motor Traffic Division (MTD) arrived at the scene, conducted assessments, and cleared the wreckage to prevent further obstruction. The deceased’s body was taken to the Real Divine Mortuary in Ibafo for an autopsy.”

The second accident occurred near the En-Salam Filling Station on the Sagamu corridor of the expressway.

A Cabstar pickup van, with registration number AGL 904 AP, collided with a Volvo truck, with registration number FZE 2350 G, loaded with goods.

Both vehicles were heading toward Ibadan when the pickup driver, identified as Tope Kolawole, lost control and rammed into the rear of the truck.

A passenger in the pickup van, 42-year-old Saka Alaigbade, was trapped in the wreckage. Despite efforts by emergency responders and bystanders to save him, he was pronounced dead upon arrival at Idera Private Hospital.

“The victim’s body was later handed over to grieving family members, while the wrecked vehicles were moved to the Sagamu MTD Police Office for further investigation,” Odutola added.

The incidents serve as grim reminders of the importance of road safety and vehicle maintenance, as the expressway remains a high-risk corridor for travelers.
