President Donald Trump on the 11th of June, 2025, says the U.S. and China have locked in a major trade deal pending his personal sign-off with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
He shared the update via his official X account, calling the U.S.-China relationship “excellent” and outlining core parts of the agreement.
“Our deal with China is done, subject to final approval with President Xi and me,” Trump posted.
“Full magnets, and any necessary rare earths, will be supplied, up front, by China.”
That supply magnets and other rare earth elements is critical. These materials power electronics, defense systems, and renewable energy tech. And China controls most of the global supply chain.
Trump says the deal guarantees consistent access to these resources, which could strengthen U.S. industries and support national security.
Another highlight: education. Trump wrote, “Including Chinese students using our colleges and universities (which has always been good with me!).”
That line hints at a notable policy shift. His previous administration had pushed to tighten visa rules for Chinese students, citing national security. But now, the door appears open.

For context, nearly 280,000 Chinese students studied in the U.S. in 2023–2024. India now leads in numbers, but China remains a key source of international students.
On trade terms, Trump revealed a wide tariff split: “We are getting a total of 55 per cent tariffs, China is getting 10 percent. Relationship is excellent!”
That margin may please U.S. manufacturers hoping for stronger protection. Still, it could spark backlash from trade partners and watchdogs.
As of now, Beijing hasn’t made a formal response. The deal’s final green light rests on a face-to-face agreement between Trump and Xi.
This comes as global eyes remain fixed on China’s economic tactics and its control over strategic exports.
The deal could signal a break from past friction and a possible turning point for two superpowers with much at stake.
