President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of more than 8,800 new Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across Nigeria as part of a sweeping Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative.
The announcement was made by Vice President Kashim Shettima during the commissioning of the Sulaiman Adebola Adegunwa Trauma Centre in Sagamu, Ogun State, over the weekend.
Shettima said the initiative aims to expand access to quality healthcare, especially at the grassroots level, while also upgrading existing tertiary institutions to better handle trauma, cancer treatment, and infectious diseases.
Describing the newly inaugurated trauma centre as a “lifeline” and a reflection of Nigeria’s growing healthcare capacity, the Vice President lauded the Adegunwa family for their contribution to public health infrastructure.

However, Shettima stressed the need for robust private sector collaboration, noting that the Federal Government cannot achieve its ambitious healthcare goals alone.
“President Tinubu has approved over 8,800 new PHCs nationwide as part of a comprehensive health sector renewal strategy,” a statement from Kamorudeen Yusuf, Special Assistant to the President on Special Duties, confirmed via his official X handle on Sunday, April 6.
The statement also highlighted the government’s focus on strengthening trauma care, oncology services, and disease outbreak response in tertiary institutions nationwide.
The Tinubu-led administration has reiterated its commitment to closing Nigeria’s healthcare delivery gaps, especially in underserved and rural areas.
