‘Stop Playing Politics with IDPs’ Suffering’, Gov Alia Warns Benue People

Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has called on the people of the state to desist from politicizing the plight of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), emphasizing that their suffering should be a shared concern for all well-meaning citizens of Benue.

In a statement released by his spokesman, Sir Tersoo Kula, the governor stressed that the challenges faced by the IDPs transcend political affiliations, requiring collective action, meaningful dialogue, and heartfelt compassion to ensure the welfare of the displaced.

According to Kula, “The plight of the IDPs is not a matter to be politicized.”

He went on to express concern about those undermining the Governor’s efforts, stating that their actions raise questions about their sincerity and goodwill toward the IDPs and the entire state.

Despite this, Governor Alia remains unwavering in his mission to bring lasting solutions to the challenges faced by the displaced and other citizens of Benue. Kula noted that the administration is focused on prioritizing safety, dignity, and development for every citizen, undeterred by detractors.

“His administration understands that true resettlement goes beyond empty rhetoric or political grandstanding.

The Durable Solutions initiative is built on a foundation of dignity and security, ensuring that the IDPs are not just resettled but empowered to rebuild their lives,” Kula stated.

The Governor’s resettlement program includes providing better shelters, skills acquisition opportunities, and access to sustainable farming, laying the foundation for a future where no Benue citizen is left vulnerable to external threats.

The statement reiterated that Governor Alia’s commitment to returning IDPs to their ancestral lands remains steadfast but emphasized that the process requires careful planning and robust security measures.

“It would be reckless and irresponsible to rush these vulnerable people back to unsafe areas where their lives would once again be endangered. This administration is actively working with security agencies to reclaim and secure these communities,” Kula explained.

He also took aim at critics who, instead of acknowledging the ongoing efforts to uplift the IDPs, choose to sow discord and division.

Kula remarked, “Those desperate to criticize every step by Gov. Alia’s administration should know better than to demand instant solutions to deep-rooted issues that were ignored for years by the previous government.”

With a firm resolve, the administration assured the people of Benue that it remains dedicated to ensuring that displaced persons are not just returned home but equipped with the means to rebuild their lives with dignity and hope.
