Rivers Emergency Rule: Niger Delta Congress Mobilizes for Mass Protest

The Niger Delta Congress (NDC) has announced a planned peaceful protest set for Monday, April 7, 2025, in response to the suspension of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the State House of Assembly.

The demonstration will take place at Isaac Boro Park in Port Harcourt, starting at 7:00 AM.

In a statement released on April 3, the NDC strongly condemned the suspension of elected officials and the declaration of a state of emergency, describing these actions as a direct assault on democracy.

Mudlaga Ogboru, the National Spokesperson for the NDC, stated, “These measures undermine the will of the people and jeopardize the stability of the Niger Delta region.”

The protest aims to demand the immediate restoration of democratic governance in Rivers State.

The NDC has urged citizens to participate in a lawful and orderly manner, emphasizing the importance of unity in defending democratic principles.

“Together, we stand united in our pursuit of justice,” the statement read.

The political turmoil in Rivers State has sparked national debate, with many questioning the legality and motives behind the suspension of key government institutions.

As the scheduled protest approaches, attention is turning to Port Harcourt, where the demonstration is expected to be a significant expression of public sentiment.

Observers note that the unfolding crisis could have broader implications for the political landscape of the Niger Delta and beyond.

The coming days will reveal whether the government will respond to the NDC’s call or if tensions will continue to escalate.
