Remo Stars extended their lead at the top of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) table to five points following a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Akwa United in Uyo on Sunday.
Sebastian U.’s 6th-minute strike had given Akwa United a dream start as they took an early lead.
Despite their advantage, the home side failed to capitalize on their momentum, with the first half ending 1-0.
Remo Stars, however, turned the game around in the second half.
S. Anakwe leveled the score in the 75th minute with a clinical finish, before O. Adebayo completed the comeback with an 85th-minute winner that silenced the home crowd at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.
The result sees Remo Stars strengthen their grip on the top spot, moving five points clear of second-placed Rivers United.
Meanwhile, Akwa United’s woes continue as they remain 19th on the log, resuming the second leg of the season on a poor run of form.
In other NPFL matches on Sunday, Heartland secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Lobi Stars, while Plateau United edged out Rivers United 2-1 to keep their hopes of a strong finish alive.
Niger Tornadoes climbed to 10th on the log after a crucial away win, defeating Rangers 1-0 in Enugu. However, the match between Kano Pillars and Elkanemi was postponed due to security concerns in Kano State.
As the NPFL season progresses, Remo Stars look poised to challenge for the title, while Akwa United face an uphill battle to avoid relegation.
