Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has accused members of Nigeria’s political elite of orchestrating a resurgence of Boko Haram insurgency to weaken President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Kalu, who represents Abia North and is a former governor of Abia State, made the claim on Monday, June 2, during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today.
He said the growing insecurity in the country is being deliberately fuelled by politicians and power brokers determined to sabotage Tinubu for political gain.
“The political class is behind Boko Haram. They are using terrorism as a tool to fight Tinubu, just like they did with past administrations,” Kalu said.
Pressed further on who he was referring to, Kalu did not mince words: “People in the political class are the ones fuelling Boko Haram. This is a political war. Some of them aren’t after money, they’re after power. They want to tear down the system just to grab control, and that’s not how power should be acquired.”

He maintained that the insurgency is not just about financial gain, but about a strategic effort by powerful actors to hijack governance.
“The insecurity in Nigeria is politically induced. These individuals, politicians, businessmen, civil servants, are not just seeking financial gain. They’re looking to hijack political power,” he added.
Kalu ended with a call for national unity and a more patriotic mindset among the elite and citizens alike. “If we consider ourselves friends and patriots, we should care about the ordinary Nigerian. We must work together to build a better country,” he urged.
His comments followed a deadly Boko Haram attack on Sunday in Mairari village, Guzamala Local Government Area of Borno State, where nine passengers were reportedly killed by improvised explosive devices.
Reacting to the tragedy, Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, Abdulkarim Lawan, condemned the incident as “inhumane” and urged the military to reclaim Guzamala from terrorist control.
Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, also raised concerns over the renewed wave of attacks in the region.
