Political Earthquake in Delta: Entire State Assembly Defects to APC

In a sweeping political shakeup, Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Emomotimi Guwor, and 21 other lawmakers on Tuesday officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), signaling a dramatic shift in the state’s political landscape.

The announcement was made during plenary in Asaba, where Speaker Guwor read out 21 letters from members declaring their intention to leave the PDP. He also formally announced his own defection on the floor of the House.

According to Guwor, the decision was unanimous among the defecting lawmakers, who cited deepening divisions in the PDP’s South South Zonal Executive and escalating crises at the party’s national level as reasons for the mass exodus.

“With this development, the Delta State House of Assembly is now fully an APC House,” the Speaker declared.

The defection effectively hands legislative control to the APC in a state long considered a PDP stronghold. It also follows earlier high-profile defections by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, compounding the PDP’s internal challenges in Delta and the broader South-South region.

Observers say the development could reshape party alignments ahead of future elections and policy directions in Delta State.

The PDP has yet to issue an official response to the defection.
