Police arrest teenager, boyfriend for faking her kidnap

The police in Ogun have arrested a 17-year-old girl, Seun Adekunle, alongside her boyfriend, Basit Olasunkanmi, 25, for allegedly faking her own kidnap.

The two lovers were arrested following a report by the teenage girl’s mother, Mrs. Bukky Adekunle, at the Enugada Police Division.

Mrs, Adekunle had told the police that her daughter whom she sent to the market about four days ago had gone missing.

She, however, stated further that she received a call from an unknown person, two days after Seun left home, claiming that he had kidnapped the girl and a ransom of N500,000 should be paid to him to secure her release.

Mrs. Adekunle added that the caller warned her not to make any report to the police if she would want her daughter back alive.

But following the report, the Divisional Police Officer, Enugada Division, Superintendent Baba Hamzat, quickly led detectives on a technical and intelligence-based investigation, which led them to a hideout, where the girl and her boyfriend were hibernating and pretending to have been held by kidnappers.

The teenager and her boyfriend were promptly arrested and brought to the station.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said preliminary investigation had revealed that the teenager’s boyfriend, who is a butcher, brainwashed the girl and lured her into the devilish plan because he needed money to settle some problems.

Oyeyemi, however, added that the state Commissioner of Police, Kenneth Ebrimson, has ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation and possible prosecution.
