Police in Akwa Ibom State, on Friday, arrested 121 persons for violating compulsory use of facemasks in public places.

Quarantine and Restriction of Movement (Second Amendment) Regulations of 2020 empowers the police to arrest anyone found not wearing facemasks to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the state.

State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP N-Nudam Frederick, said those arrested would be arraigned in the special courts established in the three senatorial districts to serve as deterrent to others.

The police spokesman said, “We shall arraign all the people that have arrested in special courts in each of the three senatorial districts across the state. We believe this will serve as deterrent to others who may go afoul of the law.

“The command enjoins the good people of the state to always use facemasks in public places as the command will continue to arrest and prosecute violators.”
