The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Kano Zonal Directorate, has launched an investigation into two suspects arrested with counterfeit United States currency totaling $899,800.

The suspects — Abubakar Hussaini, 42, and Sahabi Adamu, 53 — were initially intercepted by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) along Maiduguri Road in Wudil, Kano State.

According to a statement shared on the EFCC’s official Facebook page on Saturday, the suspects were traveling in a commercial Golf 3 Station Wagon en route to Kila Village in Gwaram Local Government Area of Jigawa State when they were apprehended.

A search of the vehicle revealed the counterfeit currency hidden inside a carton of Maggi Star seasoning cubes.

The NDLEA promptly handed the suspects and the exhibits over to the EFCC for further investigation.

Preliminary findings indicate the duo was on their way to meet one Muhammad Walo, who was expected to introduce them to a self-proclaimed spiritualist, Mallam Mashiru. The spiritualist allegedly claimed he could “transform” fake dollars into genuine currency through ritual prayers.

The EFCC stated that the suspects will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
