Oshiomhole Took Me to Tinubu — Desmond Elliot on Political Journey

Desmond Elliot, popular actor-turned-lawmaker, has opened up about the key moment that launched his political journey thanks to a powerful introduction from former Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole.

In a conversation with Chude Jideonwo, he recalled the pivotal day: “One day, Oshiomhole took me to Asiwaju and said, ‘This is my son, and he’s interested in politics.’ Asiwaju looked at me and said he knew me already and liked me. It was still a surprise to me.”

That meeting with President Bola Tinubu marked the beginning of a new chapter.

Desmond also revisited the 2023 elections, where he ran against another actor, Olumide Oworu. While he expressed no bitterness toward Olumide, he didn’t hide his disappointment toward some industry seniors.

“I wasn’t upset with him,” he said. “I was hurt by the veterans who endorsed him.”

He went further back to the turbulent #EndSARS period in 2020. While the streets boiled with protests against the SARS unit, Desmond, then a Lagos State lawmaker, was nearly attacked by unknown persons.

The protests, which demanded an end to police brutality, placed Desmond in the spotlight especially after his remarks during a House session where he called Nigerian youths “children,” sparking intense backlash.

From political endorsements to electoral rivalries and national protests, Desmond Elliot’s journey has been anything but quiet.
