In a bold move to address the long-standing clashes between herders and farmers in Ogun State, the Chairman of Yewa North Local Government, Olusola Akinbode, has inaugurated a Conflict Resolution Committee.
The announcement came on the 27th of January, 2025, during a peace meeting in Ayetoro, which brought together farmers, Fulani herders, community leaders, security agencies, and other critical stakeholders.
Akinbode explained that the committee was established to delve deeply into the root causes of the disputes and recommend sustainable solutions.
Stressing his commitment to fostering harmony within the council area, he described the meeting as a vital step to encourage open dialogue among all parties involved.
The committee, chaired by the Council Secretary, Lukumon Akinyemi, includes a traditional ruler, representatives from the Fulani and farming communities, and security agencies. Its mission is clear: to restore peace and ensure mutual understanding among stakeholders.
During the meeting, Olusola Akindele, Secretary of the Atokun Cattle Market, expressed gratitude to Governor Dapo Abiodun for initiating similar efforts at the state level, highlighting that such measures are essential for promoting peaceful coexistence throughout Ogun State.
The urgency of the initiative stems from mounting tensions in the region.
Villagers have accused herders of destroying farmlands and contaminating water sources through open grazing practices.
Recall that a related incident, happened on the 15th of January, 2025, where the Ogun State Police arrested a 30-year-old man, Samuel Egbetokun, for allegedly poisoning cows in Alabata, Odeda Local Government Area.
The suspect reportedly laced cassava with rat poison, leading to the deaths of two out of three cows grazing in the area.
With the establishment of this committee, hopes are high that the region can finally move toward lasting peace and reconciliation.
