Segun Ayinde, Abeokuta

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has expressed deep sorrow and trauma over the tragic death of 20 athletes from Kano State who were returning home after participating in the just-concluded 22nd National Sports Festival (NSF) hosted in Ogun.

The athletes reportedly lost their lives in a fatal crash involving a bus conveying about 30 of them. The accident occurred at the Dakatsalle Bridge in Kura Local Government Area of Kano State, about 50 kilometres from their destination, after they had passed through Kaduna.

In a statement issued on Saturday in Abeokuta, Governor Abiodun said the incident had left him deeply shaken and heartbroken.

“These were vibrant young people who had proudly worn the colours of Kano State at the Gateway Games 2024. They were full of dreams, looking forward to a warm reception from their loved ones after showcasing their talents. Their future was bright, and this loss is a devastating blow,” Abiodun said.

He extended his heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Kano State, describing the deceased as heroes whose patriotism and commitment to sports and national unity would never be forgotten.

“It is indeed saddening and distressing that 20 gallant athletes who represented Kano State at the just-concluded Gateway 2024 Games have lost their lives in such a painful and tragic circumstance,” he stated.

“This is incredibly painful. These were young, budding stars with so much to offer Nigeria through their talent, skill, and creativity. It is even more heartbreaking that their families, who were eagerly awaiting their return, will never see their beloved faces again.

“We are deeply saddened by this incident and pray that Almighty Allah grants them eternal rest,” he added.

Governor Abiodun also extended condolences to his Kano counterpart, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, the Chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission, Umar Bala Fagge, and the people of Kano State.

“May we never witness such a tragic incident again,” he prayed.
