‘No Crown for Impostors’: Abia Govt Disowns Okafor’s Amairoke Coronation

The Abia State Government has distanced itself from the self-proclaimed leadership of Reginald Okafor, warning that his continued claim to the title of “Eze-elect” of Amairoke community is illegal and could lead to prosecution.

At a peace meeting held Thursday in Umuahia and presided over by Deputy Governor Ikechukwu Emetu, the state government reiterated that Amairoke is not recognised as an autonomous community under Abia State law.

The meeting was aimed at resolving a leadership dispute involving the villages of Orronta and Amairoke, both located in Lokpa Ukwu, Eluama Umuchieze autonomous community in Umunneochi Local Government Area.

Emetu stressed that the government only recognises Eze Moses Okwale as the traditional ruler of the entire Umuchieze autonomous community, which includes Amairoke.

He urged all parties involved to prioritise peace and unity, noting that sustainable development is only achievable in a stable and harmonious environment.

To that end, the Deputy Governor announced the formation of a seven-member steering committee comprising representatives from both villages.

The committee, which includes Eze Okwale, will oversee mining operations in the area to ensure proper regulation and community benefit.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Uzor Nwachukwu—represented by Permanent Secretary Ogeh Maduka—reinforced the government’s stance.

Maduka stated unequivocally that Amairoke lacks legal recognition as an autonomous community and remains part of Lokpa Ukwu.

“There is no documentation within the Ministry indicating that Amairoke has been granted autonomous status,” he said.

He further described the actions of Reginald Okafor—who allegedly held a coronation ceremony on December 23, 2024—as “unauthorised, misleading, and illegal.” The Ministry emphasized that the ceremony was conducted without the knowledge or approval of the state.

“The actions of Chief Reginald Okafor contravene the Abia State Traditional Rulers and Autonomous Communities Law (as amended). The state government hereby disassociates itself from his claims, which remain unlawful and liable to prosecution,” the statement read.

The Abia State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that only duly recognised traditional rulers and communities receive official backing.
