More Yahoo Boys in Govt Than on Streets — Peter Obi

Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has described Nigeria as a “crime scene,” claiming that the prevalence of corruption in government surpasses the activities of cybercriminals on the streets.

Obi made the remarks on Saturday during the 4th graduation ceremony of Nexford University, where he urged graduates to play a key role in transforming their communities.

“When we talk about vices, don’t think it’s just the yahoo boys on the streets,” Obi stated. “The truth is, there are more yahoo people in government than outside it because we’ve turned the entire country into a crime scene, with people both inside and outside stealing.”

The former Anambra State governor underscored the need for quality leadership, rooted in character and integrity, to address the nation’s challenges.

He implored the graduates to use their education to drive change, stressing that progress requires moral courage and a commitment to doing what is right.

“It’s not rocket science, but it’s not easy. It’s about having a strong character and resisting the temptation to do wrong,” Obi said. “You’ve gained knowledge today—use it to help change society. You’re victims of a system where past generations have failed to do what is right, and now you’re bearing the consequences.”

The event served as a call to action for the graduates to not only excel in their respective fields but also to contribute meaningfully to building a better Nigeria.
