Mojisola Meranda has officially taken office as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, accompanied by all lawmakers except her predecessor, Mudashiru Obasa.
The lawmakers celebrated her leadership with chants of support. “Madam, continue your work; your work is appealing to us. You are the Speaker, you are the Speaker, you are the Speaker,” they said in unison, urging her to “speak for Lagos.”
Afterward, Meranda proceeded to her official office, where prayers were offered as she settled into her new role.
Her assumption follows Obasa’s claim that his removal was unconstitutional. Meanwhile, security around the Assembly has been heightened.
A notice from the Acting Clerk, Taiwo Ottun, mandated staff and legislative aides to present valid IDs for entry.
Lagos Police Commissioner Ishola Olawale assured the public of calm, stating, “While the police have no business inside the Assembly, it is our duty to ensure calmness outside the premises and across the state.”
