Lagos Lawmakers Reinstate Obasa as Speaker After Leadership Crisis

Mudashiru Obasa has been re-elected as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, reclaiming his position weeks after being removed by lawmakers.

Obasa, who represents Agege Constituency I, was reinstated on Monday, March 3, following the resignation of Mojisola Meranda, who stepped down as Speaker earlier in the day.

His return was set in motion by a nomination from Noheem Adams, the former Majority Leader and representative of Eti-Osa Constituency I.

The nomination was seconded by Hon. Nureni Akinsanya of Mushin Constituency.

The leadership crisis in the Lagos Assembly erupted in January when 32 lawmakers voted to remove Obasa and former Clerk Olalekan Onafeko.

However, in a swift political realignment, Meranda, who replaced Obasa, resigned during plenary on Monday, citing the need to “protect the institution of the Assembly.”

Following her resignation, Meranda was immediately nominated and sworn in as Deputy Speaker, marking another shift in the Assembly’s power structure.

With Obasa back at the helm, the plenary session continues at the Assembly chambers, solidifying his return as Speaker.
