Kano Police Backtrack as State Govt Defends Tijjaniyya Maulud Tradition

The Kano State Police Command has made a striking retreat from its earlier decision to halt the National Tijjaniyya Maulud, bowing to intense opposition from the Kano State Government.

This annual religious gathering, a significant event held at the iconic Sani Abacha Stadium for 39 uninterrupted years, is set to proceed today despite initial security alarms raised by law enforcement.

The police, citing intelligence reports of possible terrorist attacks targeting public gatherings in key locations across the state, had swiftly deployed officers to the venue to bolster surveillance and maintain order.

However, the Kano State Government vehemently opposed this move, describing it as a disruptive and unwarranted interference in a peaceful tradition.

Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, labeled the police’s actions as “unnecessary” and “unjustified,” urging the Federal Government to intervene and ensure the withdrawal of officers to allow the Maulud to proceed unhindered.

In a Saturday morning Facebook post, Police Command spokesperson Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa sought to reassure the public, stating that the deployment was purely for security purposes.

He further issued a cautionary advisory against criminal activities, warning attendees to beware of individuals setting up phone charging stations near the venue with the intent to steal mobile devices. “Be cautious of people who may set up phone charging stations with the intention of stealing mobile devices,” Kiyawa emphasized.

Despite the earlier standoff, the Maulud is unfolding as planned, with a massive crowd already gathering at the stadium, demonstrating the event’s enduring significance and resilience.
