INEC Rejects Recall Petition Against Senator Natasha Over Insufficient Signatures

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed the recall petition against the Senator representing Kogi Central, stating that the signatures submitted fell short of constitutional requirements.

This was made known in a statement issued on Thursday, April 3, signed by Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman, Information & Voter Education Committee.

INEC announced that after a thorough review, only 208,132 signatures/thumbprints were verified, representing 43.86% of registered voters in the district. This figure is below the 50%+1 threshold required by law.

“For emphasis, a petition for the recall of a Senator must comply with the provision of Section 69(a) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) which requires the signatures of more than one-half of the registered voters in the constituency,” INEC stated.

The electoral body explained that the total number of registered voters in Kogi Central is 474,554, meaning that at least 237,278 valid signatures were needed for the recall process to proceed. However, the petitioners fell short by 29,146 signatories.

“Consequently, the petition has not met the requirement of Section 69(a) of the Constitution. Therefore, no further action shall be taken on the recall of the Senator,” the statement read.

INEC reiterated that the process was conducted fairly and transparently, ensuring compliance with all legal and procedural requirements. It further disclosed that a public notice, detailing the outcome of the review, has been published on its website and social media platforms.
