Frimpong Joins Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in Long-Term Deal

Liverpool have confirmed the signing of Dutch international Jeremie Frimpong from Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen.

The 24-year-old right-back sealed his move to Anfield on Friday after completing a medical and putting pen to paper on a long-term contract at the AXA Training Centre.

Frimpong, who was a standout performer during Leverkusen’s unbeaten domestic double-winning campaign last season, expressed his delight at becoming a Liverpool player.

“Liverpool came and showed interest – for me, it was a no-brainer,” he told the club’s media. “I told my agents, ‘Just get this done’. I’m going to give my all – energy, work rate – and hopefully we win together.”

The Amsterdam-born defender made 190 appearances for Leverkusen over four and a half seasons, registering 30 goals and 44 assists.

He played a key role in the club’s historic 2023–24 season, which included Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal triumphs and a 51-match unbeaten run.

His performances earned him back-to-back inclusions in the Bundesliga Team of the Season for 2022–23 and 2023–24.

Frimpong started his career at Manchester City’s academy before moving to Celtic in 2019, where he won three major titles before transferring to Germany.

On the international scene, he debuted for the Netherlands in October 2023 and has since earned 12 caps, scoring once.

He also shared his excitement about playing under new Liverpool manager Arne Slot.

“I spoke to him a few times – he’s really positive. When I was with the national team, the Feyenoord boys would tell me great things about him. Now I get to work with him, and I’m really looking forward to that.”

Liverpool are expected to announce Frimpong’s squad number later this summer.
