The Federal Government has unveiled plans for the 2025 Democracy Day celebration, announcing that a national public lecture will hold on Wednesday, June 11, as part of a week-long lineup of commemorative events.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday, June 5, by Mr. Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF).
According to the statement, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has inaugurated an Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) to oversee the planning and coordination of all activities related to the observance of Democracy Day 2025.
Represented by the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, the SGF described Democracy Day as a solemn opportunity for national reflection.
“This year’s Democracy Day is an opportunity to reflect on the contributions and sacrifices of our founding fathers who fought for Nigeria’s independence, and to honour the heroes who endured hardship and made enormous sacrifices to secure democratic governance from the grips of military dictatorship,” Akume stated during the committee’s inaugural meeting.
The schedule of events will commence with a World Press Briefing and Special Juma’at Service on Friday, June 6, followed by a Church Service on Sunday, June 8. A Youth Engagement Programme is planned for Tuesday, June 10, while the Public Lecture will take place on Wednesday, June 11. The celebration will culminate in a Presidential Broadcast and a National Parade on Thursday, June 12, which marks Nigeria’s official Democracy Day.
