FG Refunds Nasarawa ₦9.54bn for Usman Dan Fodio Airport Takeover

Nasarawa State has received ₦9.54 billion from the Federal Government. The payment is a reimbursement for the Lafia Cargo Airport, now officially renamed Usman Dan Fodio Airport.

Governor Abdullahi Sule made the announcement on the 19th of May, 2025, during a stakeholders’ forum at the Government House, Lafia.

The airport, opened in 2021 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, was taken over by the Federal Government in 2022.

Since then, the state government has consistently pushed for a refund of the money spent on the airport’s construction.

Traditional rulers and lawmakers, who played key roles in getting federal approval, attended the meeting. Governor Sule thanked them for their efforts and confirmed that the long-anticipated funds had finally come through.

Speakers at the event applauded the governor for being transparent and focused on progress.

Attention now shifts to how the money will be used.

Talks centered on rural infrastructure, with a strong push for road construction and capital projects that can boost movement and trade in hard-to-reach areas.
