The Federal Government has prepared to receive Nigerians who may be deported from the United States, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has said.

Speaking with Vanguard on Tuesday evening, NiDCOM’s Director of Media and Corporate Affairs, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, stated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is handling the situation.

He added that an inter-agency committee has been set up to coordinate the response.

“The Federal Government has set up an inter-agency committee, comprising the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, NiDCOM, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, and the Office of the National Security Adviser, NSA, should there be mass deportation of Nigerians from the US,” Balogun said.

However, he clarified that NiDCOM was not aware of any Nigerians currently being processed for deportation.

Reports indicate that about 3,690 Nigerians in the United States could face deportation as part of Donald Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigrants.

According to a document compiled by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), as of November 24, 2024, there were 1,445,549 non-citizens with final removal orders.

The data, broken down by nationality, shows that Mexico and El Salvador top the list, with 252,044 and 203,822 people, respectively, facing deportation.

ICE, responsible for enforcing US immigration laws, has already begun mass deportations, with hundreds of migrants arrested and others flown out of the country on military aircraft last Thursday.

Nigerians and other African migrants in the US could be next in line for deportation under the American government’s operation.
