The Federal Government has announced that Thursday, May 1, 2025, will be observed as a public holiday nationwide in honour of Workers’ Day.
Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on Tuesday through an official statement released to the press.
He lauded Nigerian workers for their unwavering dedication and sacrifices, highlighting their significant role in shaping both the domestic and international stature of the country.
“There is dignity in labour,” Tunji-Ojo said. “The dedication and commitment to the work we do is vital to nation-building.”
Workers’ Day, celebrated annually on May 1st, is recognized globally as a moment to appreciate the contributions of labour to national development.
In Nigeria, it also serves as a reminder of the central role of the workforce in the country’s economic aspirations.

In his message, the Minister emphasized the need for peace, innovation, and productivity as catalysts for industrial growth.
He urged workers to continuously raise the standards in their respective trades, noting that such advancement would enhance governance and allow Nigerians to benefit fully from the country’s resources.
Reaffirming the government’s priorities, Tunji-Ojo stated: “This administration is fully committed to the security of life and property for every citizen and foreigner in the country.”
He concluded by encouraging Nigerians to remain hopeful and supportive of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, assuring that the government remains steadfast in its developmental promises.
The announcement was formally signed by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Interior.
